Festas de Nossa Senhora da Agonia 2026

The Festas de Nossa Senhora da Agonia is considered the most important folk festival in northern Portugal. Held in Viana do Castelo each August, it combines a religious procession honouring Our Lady of Agony (the town’s patron) with five days of folk dancing, traditional costume parades, bullfighting, and one of the best fireworks displays in the country.

What Happens During the Five Days

The festival runs from 19 to 23 August 2026. The most significant events are the procession on the feast day itself (around 20 August) and the Parade of Costume and Mordomo on the Friday, when hundreds of women from the Minho region march through the centre wearing the elaborate traditional costume of the Viana do Castelo region - black wool skirts, white embroidered blouses, and gold filigree jewellery that can weigh several kilograms per set. This gold, often family heirloom pieces, is the most visually striking element of the entire festival.

The Mordomo (steward) parade involves local families who sponsor and lead sections of the procession, a role passed down through generations. The religious procession carries the image of Nossa Senhora da Agonia from the chapel at the edge of town through the main streets to the river, accompanied by brass bands and crowds carrying candles.

Evening fireworks over the Lima River take place on at least two nights during the festival. The display launched from barges on the water is among the most impressive in the country.

Attending as a Visitor

Street events are free to attend. Some evening concerts or arena events (bullfighting has been part of the programme in past years, though cultural pressure has reduced this element) may require tickets. Accommodation in Viana do Castelo itself books out months in advance for the festival week. Nearby Braga (40 kilometres south) offers more options and connects to Viana by regional rail in around 50 minutes.

Getting to Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo is in the far northwest of Portugal, approximately 75 kilometres north of Porto. Regional trains from Porto’s Campanhã station take around 75 minutes and run frequently throughout the day. By car, the A3 motorway north from Porto then the A27 west takes about 60 minutes.
