Óbidos Christmas Village 2026

Óbidos is a medieval walled town that looks, at any time of year, as though it was built for fairy tales. In December, the Óbidos Christmas Village (Vila Natal de Óbidos) leans into this setting fully: the cobbled lanes inside the walls fill with craft stalls, the town gate is strung with lights, and an ice rink appears in the main square. It has become one of the most popular Christmas markets in Portugal.

What to Expect Inside the Walls

The market runs throughout December, with stalls selling handmade ceramics, woodwork, linen, artisan food, and ginjinha (the local cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups, which Óbidos is famous for year-round). The market quality is generally higher than typical fairground Christmas markets; many vendors are local craftspeople rather than mass-market traders.

The ice rink in the Praça de Santa Maria is open daily, with session times and pricing confirmed closer to December. In recent years, entry to the rink has been ticketed separately from the market itself, which is free to browse. Check the Óbidos municipality website for 2026 pricing.

Light installations run through the main street (Rua Direita) and along sections of the castle walls after dark. The display is best seen from around 18:00 onward. Walking the walls at night during December, with the illuminated town below, is one of the more memorable experiences on offer.

Getting There from Lisbon

Óbidos is approximately 80 kilometres north of Lisbon. The most practical public transport option is the Rede Expressos bus from Lisbon’s Campo Grande terminal, which takes about 75 minutes and costs approximately €8 each way. By car, the A8 motorway is a 45-to-60-minute drive depending on traffic.

There is limited parking inside and immediately around the walls; arrive early in the morning on weekends or expect a 15-minute walk from roadside parking outside town.

Tips for Visitors

Weekends in December are very busy. If you can visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will have the lanes mostly to yourself. The town is small enough to cover thoroughly in three to four hours, making it an easy day trip from Lisbon or from the nearby coastal town of Peniche.
